Matrix Initiatives, Inc., manufactured and marketed a homeopathic remedy, called Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Gel. The active ingredient is zinc (in the form of zinc gluconate). It has been known for decades that zinc ions are toxic to olfactory epithelium (the cells of the nose) and harmful to the scent tissue in the upper reaches in the nasal cavity. After spraying these zinc-based products directly into the nose, users feel an intense burning sensation and then lose their sense of smell and/or taste shortly thereafter. At this point, the damage is done. The ramifications of losing one's sense of smell are devastating.
Recently, Matrix Initiatives, Inc., the maker of Zicam®, entered into a settlement with approximately 320 Zicam® users. The settlement was not a class action settlement, meaning that other users can still come forward and assert claims. Zicam® Nasal Gel continues to be sold and does not contain a warning about the risk of loss of smell and/or taste.
Zicam® comes in other forms (e.g., lozenges), however, only forms that are sprayed directly into the nose are associated with the loss of smell and/or taste.
If you or a loved one has lost your sense of taste or smell after using Zicam® spray, you may contact our firm for a free case evaluation and consultation.
